Namgyal School
Namgyal Secondary School was founded in Gokarna (Kathmandu) in 1988 by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
The school, one of the first in the whole country, every year strives to provide about 400 Tibetan and Hiamalyan students with a holistic, modern and quality education, as well as rooted in the rich Tibetan cultural heritage.
The main subjects taught here are: English, Nepalese, Tibetan, mathematics, science, social sciences, health, computer science, Tibetan dance and music, Buddhist philosophy, along with games and sports. For the last two years, students can choose between Commerce and Humanities course of studies.
Since most of the students come from very remote areas, during the academic year they reside in the dormitories of the school, where they live a social environment respectful of their culture and traditions. During the year, performances of Tibetan dances and songs are periodically organized, along with sports competitions.
Importance is also given to student bodies (for example the Green Club and the Student Council), which nurture social, teamwork and student leadership skills and outreach activities for their families, to whom the importance of education is conveyed.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the students’ parents could not support their children’s studies, so ASIA, since summer 2021, decided to support the school and its students (even during university) with the Scholarship Project.
